She took a while to arrive, but summer is here! And we are so excited for the season of good vibes and peak hair styles. Think 70s-inspired locks, bold colours, and revamps of classic looks – this time of year has always seen people step in and shake up their look ready to enjoy every drop of summer.
If you’re ready to book a hair appointment but aren’t sure what you want yet, there’s plenty of hairstyles trending at the moment to make you feel like a glowing goddess.
So, whether you want to step into summer looking as hot as the weather or transition into a glow up with summer radiance, here is a roundup of our favourite hair trends for summer 2021 for inspiration:
Curtains bangs have been all the rage for a few years in a row, and if you’ve resisted the urge to cut a set in yourself, we’re proud and impressed.
If you’ve not heard of them, curtain bangs are essentially a long-split fringe that are typically styled flicked outwards. Think 60s and 70s bouncy long fringes and you can’t go far wrong.
The beauty of this type of cut is that it adds a softness to the face with framing. They also grow out well (especially compared to a full fringe) and thankfully, can be styled in a couple of different ways to keep the look fresh.
Also trending this year are the curly bangs to elevate your curtain bangs to the next level and thanks to The Curly Girl Method shooting to popularity, more and more of us are embracing our natural curls.
Also known as The Money Piece; this iconic look is an extra bright frame around the face making the rest of your colour pop, adding a dimension to your overall colour.
So how does this type of look work? Well, we balayage the front strands of your hair a lighter colour than the rest. When done subtly, it can truly boost your complexion and act as a natural sun kissed look.
This style is versatile though, with many opting for a stand-out look with the highly popular sharp contrast. But, if you do prefer those softer tones, it’s still a sure-fire way to make you look… well, fire! 🔥
What to watch out for:
If you’ve got fragile hair, or lots of dye on it already, opting for the drastic contrast could cause damage to your strands. Speak to our

Also known as a wolf haircut, butterfly, or a reinvented mullet, this old-school look has been resurrected thanks to viral videos on social. The shag is a look that is all business in the front and party in the back, and we’re not mad about it.
This hairstyle has got everything: volume, wispy layers, attitude; it’s a cut that suits any hair texture and face shape, thanks to the layers cut in to compliment and customise. If you’re looking for a reinvention – to step out of the salon feeling brand new – then this is the hairstyle for you. If you love the look, but aren’t ready to welcome an all-out wolf, then a subtle version can make just as much of an impact without being too over the top.
What to watch out for:
Don’t fall victim to an at-home version of this cut, even if every other video on TikTok and Instagram Reels is telling you to. A shaggy look is supposed to be sexy and sassy, but gone wrong in the hands of a novice, it can look like you’ve been attacked by birds.
The sexy hairdo is back, and we love to see someone with a natural yet glamourous Italian or box Bob. It oozes cool and sexy, it gives off that ‘I don’t care’ vibe, like you didn’t try at all, but you also put loads of effort in; this hair style is everything.
It can be worn with any parting, cut to dust the shoulder or shorter swinging under the ear, either way it’s got a soft volume.
When an Italian bob is done right, you’d think you were on the beach in Italy sipping on an Aperol Spritz. Bellissima!
What to watch out for:
Summer is all about low maintenance looks so the bob can be hard to manage for those with naturally frizzy hair, and the Italian Bob can also be tricky for those with fine, flat hair, as it doesn’t hold the texture in the same way. Especially as this type of bob is a sharp shape, with no layers.
Beach waves inspired by the salt, sand and sun-drenched hair; mermaid curls emit the feeling of freedom that you only get from the balmy summer days.
Thankfully, mermaid curls are super easy to achieve with either a wide-barrel press-curler or some skills with your straighteners.
What to watch out for:
There’s not much to consider with these types of curls other than if you don’t wash your hair that often, you’ll be stuck with these curls until wash day – which can, if not cared for, start to make the hair appear dry.
Less of a trend, and more of a timeless style. Lightening your locks is the classic look for the summer months. But this time round, it got a reboot. Sunkissed hair is subtle face framing (less in your face than The Money Piece), it screams that you’ve spent time on the beach soaking up the sun – it’s so natural looking that people will wonder whether you even got it done at the hairdressers.
What to watch out for:
Blonde will always be a high-maintenance look, so be sure that you’re looking after it well – especially in the summer heat, else your hair can dry out. Add oil to your ends every night before bed and invest in a proper haircare routine to protect your luscious locks.
As the noughties makes a come back for fashion and beauty, it’s no wonder that it’s also being reinvented for hair. Side partings have made a return and are a surprising way to freshen up a look (and look great with a bob!). Side partings can be worn on either side so give more flexibility when styling.
What to watch out for:
If you’ve got baby hairs or some broken hair around the hairline, a side parting can reveal these areas. If you’ve already got fragile hair here, avoid sleeping in a side parting with this hair exposed, and invest in a good hair care routine that encourages growth – or opt for hair growth serums.
