Summer season is in full swing with soaring temperatures, trips to the beach and endless barbecues, but remember when enjoying the sun, staying safe is most important; that incudes protecting your hair and scalp as well as the rest of your skin.
So, what are the best tips for keeping your hair in good condition through summer? Let’s talk to our hair experts at Charlie Milz…
One of the biggest question our clients ask us is how to keep their colour fresh and vibrant through the summer months, and not fade under the sun.
Sun can bring out the natural warmth in your hair, making it feel brassy and faded – particularly noticeable on blondes so if you’re out in the sun regularly, your hair colour can drastically change. As part of your regular hair wash routine, purple shampoos and conditioners can help knock back brassy tones and keep your colour in check.
Products such as Keep me Vivid and Colour Obsessed can help keep your colour popping for longer too – use regularly to see your colour last longer.
If you’ve got bleached or blonde hair, then it’s not just the sun that can alter the colour of your hair; the chlorine in swimming pools can turn bleached hair green! We’d recommend using a leave-in conditioner before taking a dip to help create a barrier against the chlorine. This also helps keep the hair hydrated when sunbathing.
The best way to protect your scalp from the sun is to wear a hat and take regular breaks in the shade. We’d also recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF scalp spray to prevent sunburn on your head, which leads to an irritated and flaky scalp.
There are loads of scalp sprays on the market that you can apply to your parting and throughout your hair. If you’re worried about the appearance of greasy hair, then there are powdered SPF available on the market; these do come at a higher price point but are worth it if your hair washing cycle is longer than a couple of days.
As well as protecting your scalp, protecting your hair is important, too. A good spritz of a heat protector, leave-in conditioner or specially designed sprays, such as Matrix Miracle Create 20 Benefit Spray, can offer UV and heat protection, with anti-humidity and hydration properties – which can help hydrate and de-frizz.
The sun can frazzle our delicate locks so keeping your hair hydrated and protected against harmful UV rays is important. And that means in this country too, as protecting yourself in the UK is just as important as when you’re abroad.
With holiday season comes a lot more time at the beach, and exposure to not only harsh heat on the coast but sea salt can also contribute to dried out locks. If swimming in the sea, use a leave-in conditioner to prevent the salts clinging to your hair and drying it out.
We recommend Moisture Me Rich as a product for boosting hydration levels; it cleanses the hair to rid of any build up from chlorine, sea salt and sun cream using glycerine, with a matching conditioner available to really improve moisturising for your hair.
As well as using sprays mentioned above, you could opt for a long-term solution by way of hair smoothing treatments. These are designed to help reduce frizz, add shine, and make hair more manageable overall.
The highly sought-after treatment works by re-bonding the hair to reduce the fractured and frizzy element, helping them to form a sleeker pattern. This treatment has hair looking glossy and shiny for up to 12 weeks so ideal to carry you through the summer months.

Even if you follow all the steps to keep your hair as healthy and hydrated as can be through the summer, months of exposure to heat, chlorine and sea salt can wreak havoc on the hair. It’s best to book in for a fresh cut and treatment pre- and post-summer to lessen the damage.
Remember, at-home hydration treatments are great for between salon visits but if you want a deep conditioning treatment, you could pop in and inject some hydration into your hair.
